Pain is an inevitable consequence of living and is an indication that we’re alive. Pain is experienced by all since birth till the last breath of life.Pain is the most frequent cause of suffering and disability that seriously impairs the quality of life for millions of people throughout the world. Because pain impairs one’s ability to have a productive life, pain in general and chronic pain in particular are serious economic & social problems as well as major health issues.
Pain can be physical or mental. Acute physical pain in all probability is an indication of something being wrong in the body, and hence is a symptom.
On the other hand, there are certain conditions where the bodily ailment has long been healed or there is no identifiable cause for the amount of pain or the primary condition cannot be treated. In such conditions, pain no longer remains a symptom but becomes a disease in itself and was rightly declared so by Sternbach in 1981.
